This week EUSAS welcomes Sascha Glasl and Tjeerd Haccou - two of the three founders of Space&Matter, an architectural practice based in Amsterdam.
“By origin, Space&Matter is an architecture office, but we do much more than just designing buildings... Aside from designing at all scales, we create urban development strategies; make online platforms; and even initiate new business ventures. Everything we do is always focused on improving the built environment and promoting a cohesive society."
"The impact of our work is what matters most to us. We strongly believe that architectural design can do more than 'just' turn heads. A smart design approach can trigger innovations and contribute to financial, environmental and social improvements.
We have a large toolbox of design skills to create clever concepts, inclusive design strategies and innovative businesses models."
Two of our committee members - Rachel & Henri - worked for Space&Matter between their MA and MArch and were keen to invite the founders of the practice to Edinburgh to give a talk. This week's lecture promises truly unique and inspiring projects which will prompt us to erase any preconceptions of what an architect can or cannot do. From turning redundant bridge control buildings into boutique hotel rooms, to founding an online platform which empowers citizens to initiate and realise collective architectural projects, to repurposing house boats into artists' workshops on a polluted shipyard, to building Europe's largest urban farm on top of a 13 storey building, there's nothing they won't tackle with enthusiasm and wit.
We hope you'll join us for what will be a fresh and stimulating conversation to start your New Year right. It's not one to be missed!
